Gemma quickly located the Fish and Wildlife Service Office. For a town this size, the building was pretty impressive. It looked out of place with the other small-town buildings surrounding it. Once parked, she got out and immediately headed to the front door.

Immediately stepping inside, Gemma found herself in a waiting area.

“Can I help you?” a woman asked from behind the booth.

“My name is Gemma Jaeger. I’d like to speak to someone about my brother-in-law.”

“Your brother-in-law?”

“Yes, Clay Hickman. I’m trying to learn if any headway has been made with his attack.”

“Miss Jaeger. Let me get the person looking into this. Please have a seat.”

Gemma didn’t want to have a seat. She watched the short buxom woman, whose nameplate read Sylvia, walk into an office. Sylvia had a haughty feel about her as she talked to the agent inside.

Gemma instantly saw how agitated he was. The agent quickly shook his head, but then finally agreed. Sylvia walked back with a fake smile to Gemma.

“Miss Jaeger, Agent Palmer will see you now. This way, please.”

“Thank you,” Gemma said, feeling a bit uneasy once again.

Agent Palmer did his best not to let his eyes roll up to Gemma. She barely caught his curse as he moved to stand, but Gemma gestured him down, and he sat back in his chair. As an alternative, he extended his hand open-palmed and invited her to sit. Gemma stopped to let him call the shots and proceeded with the formalities and her first question.

“Agent Palmer…”

Holding his hand up, she was quickly cut off.

“Please. Just Palmer. Save the Agent for the city. How may I help you today, Ms. Jaeger?”

“Well, like I said to Sylvia, is it?”

“Yes, Sylvia.

“Clay is my brother-in-law. My sister is upset about this attack.”

“That is totally understandable,” he quickly replied.

“Do you have any idea what type of animal attacked him?”

“At this point, we have no leads whatsoever.”

“Really?” she said.

“Yes. It’s very odd. We couldn’t find any tracks or anything. There was only blood on the patio. In the back of the yard, and nothing else.”

“Nothing else?” Gemma repeated.

“That’s correct.”

“Well, tell me this. Have you ever had this kind of attack before?”

“To tell you the truth. I’ve only been here for a year. The previous agent, Sam Powell, died suddenly, and they quickly called me in as a replacement from out of state.”

“Oh, so you’ve never had to do anything like this.”

“No, I haven’t. Harmony Springs is pretty quiet. And it was one of the main reasons I decided to take the position. You know, for my wife. She wanted to get away from the city. High crime rate.”

“No kids?”

“No, not yet,” he began before steering the conversation back. “Miss Jaeger. There are a few men out checking the surrounding woods and forests. But right now, all they’re coming up with are the typical foxes, rabbits, possums. Nothing big enough to attack a man.”

“And put him in a hospital.”

“I’m sorry that I couldn’t give you anything else. But that’s all we have right now.”

“Okay, thank you for your time.
